of the Indies /

To Doña María de Toledo vicereine of the Española island /
and of the other islands and mainland that were discovered /
by the admiral Don Cristopher Columbus, your father-in-law /
and by his industry. I saw your letter of twenty seven of November /
of the past one, and you may belief that I mourned a lot /
the passing of the admiral your husband, both for him being /

And I reckoned as a service the care you take in /
alerting me of what happened in the uprising of the Blacks /
and of the Indians, and of what is convenient to decide for the /
remedy of it and wellbeing of that island. I will soon mandate /
to decide what may be most convenient to our service and wellbeing of /
that island and pacification and quiet of it. You [must] in
my service help and favor in everything that is convenient /

On July 20, 1527, King Charles V wrote to vicereine of La Española María de Toledo acknowledging receipt of a letter from her of November 27, 1526. He also expresses condolences for the passing of Toledo’s husband, viceroy Diego Colón.

Reiterating a content of an earlier letter of his to Toledo of June 8, the monarch also mentions having received news from the vicereine about an “uprising of the Blacks and the Indians” (“levantamiento de los negros y de los indios”) as well as suggestions from Toledo about the most convenient response vis a vis the situation. He also promised to give orders soon as to “what may be most convenient to our service and the good of that island and its pacification and quiet.”
