Este crecimiento se aceler\u00f3 hasta principios de la d\u00e9cada de 1540, cuando la poblaci\u00f3n aparentemente super\u00f3 los 40.000 individuos. Esto fue seguido por una disminuci\u00f3n relativa en la segunda mitad del siglo, cuando el n\u00famero de negros en general cay\u00f3 por debajo de los de la primera mitad, comenzando con una fuerte ca\u00edda de alrededor del 50% a alrededor de 12.000 a finales de la d\u00e9cada de 1540. Se produjo una alternancia entre fases de alzas (m\u00e1s notablemente en la d\u00e9cada de 1580) y bajas durante las cinco d\u00e9cadas posteriores, lo que result\u00f3 en una estabilizaci\u00f3n relativa de entre 13.000 y 10.000 personas. El gr\u00e1fico de esta p\u00e1gina, elaborado por el Instituto de Estudios Dominicanos de CUNY con datos de las becas existentes, muestra claramente estas tendencias.<\/p><p>Despu\u00e9s de la d\u00e9cada de 1510, la poblaci\u00f3n de ascendencia africana negra en La Espa\u00f1ola nunca fue menor a, aproximadamente, 10,000 individuos. Despu\u00e9s de eso, los afrodescendientes se convirtieron en una mayor\u00eda demogr\u00e1fica permanente que a veces puede haber sido relativamente menos numerosa, pero siempre super\u00f3 en n\u00famero a la poblaci\u00f3n blanca. Esto inici\u00f3 una tendencia en la demograf\u00eda racial de predominio de la poblaci\u00f3n de ascendencia africana negra, con una variedad de tonos de piel generados por una mayor mezcla de nativos, negros y blancos que ha persistido hasta el siglo XXI.<\/p><p>Estas cifras generales hasta ahora disponibles sobre la poblaci\u00f3n negra de La Espa\u00f1ola durante su primer siglo como sociedad colonial fueron recopiladas principalmente por acad\u00e9micos dominicanos que utilizaron en su mayor\u00eda estimaciones contenidas en fuentes secundarias, como informes y cartas de funcionarios coloniales individuales y residentes privados. Queda mucha investigaci\u00f3n de archivo adicional por hacer para evaluar estas estimaciones con mayor precisi\u00f3n cuantitativa en comparaci\u00f3n con otros tipos de datos contenidos en fuentes primarias y, lo que es m\u00e1s importante, para determinar las razones de la secuencia de ciclos de contracci\u00f3n y expansi\u00f3n relativa de la poblaci\u00f3n negra-mulata observable en la segunda mitad del siglo, pero ha habido una casi unanimidad general en los estudios dominicanos en cuanto a las tendencias generales descritas anteriormente.<\/p><p>En cualquier caso, a la vista de estos datos, parece fuera de discusi\u00f3n que La Espa\u00f1ola no s\u00f3lo fue el primer lugar donde los negros africanos y\/o sus descendientes se establecieron en Am\u00e9rica, sino tambi\u00e9n el primer lugar del continente donde, al menos durante todo el primer siglo de implementaci\u00f3n del sistema colonial asociado a la expansi\u00f3n imperialista europea occidental, fueron mayor\u00eda demogr\u00e1fica.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The growth of the black population in La Espa\u00f1ola in the 1500s Since the arrival of the first known Blacks on the island of La Espa\u00f1ola during the two decades following Columbus&#8217; 1492 expedition, the long term trend\u00a0in population of Black African ancestry in the island-colony was predominantly one of growth throughout the century.
