Valbuena, Spain<\/strong><br \/><strong>Theme: License for bishop Pedro Su\u00e1rez de Deza to ship from Seville to La Espa\u00f1ola ten slaves to\u00a0work in the construction of the church at the village of La Concepci\u00f3n or at others in its diocese<\/strong><br \/><strong>Source: PARES, Portal de Archivos Espa\u00f1oles&#8211;Archivo General de Indias, INDIFERENTE, 419, L.5,\u00a0F. 275V<\/strong><br \/><br \/>The Catholic church as it was developing in La Espa\u00f1ola in 1514 used enslaved laborers (\u201cesclavos\u201d), presumably Black Africans since white slaves were rare, in the construction of its church buildings.\u00a0 The particular batch of ten slaves being allowed here to be taken to La Espa\u00f1ola, understanding this was done \u201cunder the conditions and in the form and manner that we have mandated,\u201d were initially destined to the erection of a church in La Concepci\u00f3n (also known today as La Vega), one of the early towns of the colony located on the Eastern slopes of the Central Mountains of the island, but it was contemplated that they could be deployed to alternate locations where other churches were being built.<br \/><br \/>As it may be seen at the time in other situations, the Christianity of the colonizers, in these case the Church\u2019s officials themselves, did not prevent them from using human beings as slaves.
