Valladolid, Spain.<br \/>Theme: \u00a0Spanish king Charles V says many Black slaves are being carried to La Espa\u00f1ola without the royal license,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Normal__Char\">being\u00a0introduced \u201csecretly\u201d or abusing the number of slaves allowed by each license.\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span class=\"Normal__Char\">Source: PARES<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"Normal__Char\"><strong>, Portal de Archivos Espa\u00f1oles\u2014Archivo General de Indias, INDIFERENTE,421,L.12\u00a0<\/strong><br \/><br \/><\/span><span class=\"Normal__Char\">In late June of 1527 we find again King Charles V reiterating in a communication to the judges of Santo Domingo\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"Emphasis__Char\">Audiencia<\/span><span class=\"Normal__Char\">\u00a0that he is informed that numbers of \u201cBlack slaves\u201d are being introduced in La Espa\u00f1ola either surreptitiously or by travelers going from Spain that are carrying larger numbers of slaves than those allowed in the licenses issued to them, thus violating the royal regulations on the matter.<br \/><br \/><\/span><span class=\"Normal__Char\">Those bringing in slaves without licenses reportedly tried to argue before the local authorities that it was enough to pay the\u00a0almojarifazgo\u00a0tax in Santo Domingo for the slaves to be allowed in.
