Santo Domingo.<\/strong><br \/><strong>Theme:\u00a0Inventory of property of Captain Ger\u00f3nimo Ag\u00fcero Bardeci, including black household slaves, seized by orders from the President of the Audiencia, Antonio Osorio in<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Santo Domingo, 1605<\/strong><br \/><strong>Source: Archivo General de Indias, Escriban\u00eda 3-A, CUNY Dominican Studies Institute Dominican Colonial Documents Collection<\/strong><\/p><p>In 1605, La Espa\u00f1ola\u2019s military captain Ger\u00f3nimo Ag\u00fcero was accused and tried by the judicial authorities for being an accomplice to or benefiting from smuggling activities in the\u00a0<em>Banda del Norte<\/em>\u00a0region after being commissioned precisely to stop this economic practice, socially widespread among the settlers of the region, but criminal in the eyes of the colony\u2019s authorities.<\/p><p>Part of the judicial proceedings against Ag\u00fcero comprised confiscating his property, including his household furniture and other items, along with eight Black slaves, all listed in the inventory produced to officialize the confiscation. The slaves are listed as four women described as Black, another woman described as\u00a0<em>mulata<\/em>, and a Black boy and two children, one male and one female, described as\u00a0<em>mulaticos<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p><p>Three of the Black female slaves are identified with ethnic names, two as\u00a0<em>Bran<\/em>\u00a0and one as\u00a0<em>Arada<\/em>.
